I often get questions about mixing Danios of different species in the same tank together. As a general rule, if the fish are close to the same size and temperament, there are no problems keeping them together.
There are exceptions to this in regards to the fish cross breeding. With this in mind, the fish I would NOT keep together are;
Zebra Danios (Danio rerio) and Leopard Danios (Danio rerio var. frankei)
Celestial Pearl Danios (Danio margaritatus) and Emerald Dwarf Rasboras (Danio erythromicron)
Danio kyathit – There is a Spotted variety & a Striped variety.
In July of 2012, I came into possession of some very hard to get Blue Moon Danio (Devario xyrops). My good fortune came about due to my friend Dr. Stephan Tanner of Swiss Tropicals. Stephan has some super contacts in the aquarium hobby and often comes into possession of fish that are nearly impossible to obtain. As I understand it, these fish came into Aqua Global in Germany as a bycatch of the fish collectors. In other words, when the collectors are out catching fish, they happen to net a few, often unidentified, fish in the process. Sometimes these fish go unnoticed when the exporters are shipping the main group. Continue reading Spawning Devario xyrops
Back in mid September I posted about some cory cats I had picked up from Holly over at HCA Aquatics.
These are some really lovely Green Corydoras aeneus and I got them with the full intention of spawning them and spreading the joy at next years auctions and swaps. Continue reading Corydoras aeneus (green)
I treated myself to some new cory cats the other day. I’ve watched as Holly @ HCA Aquatics listed young fish from her group of breeders and I finally pulled the trigger and bought a group for my fish room.
With a bit of luck this winter, I’ll have some of these beauties ready for the Swaps and Auctions next spring!
Have you noticed, that on many of the on-line fish hang-outs there seem to be forum members that their only purpose is to spew negativity and tell others that they can’t do something. You know the type; you can’t have that many fish, you can’t mix those fish, you can’t cycle your tank that way, you can do this and you can’t do that, blah blah blah.
Now don’t get me wrong. I’m not talking about those people who are offering good sound advise. I’m only talking about that group who never have anything good to offer and simply parrot something they have heard from another nay-sayer.
Maybe I’m just getting old, but I can’t see where this helps new members of our hobby. In fact I think it has just the opposite affect, and puts them off the hobby. After all, if it’s so complicated and there are so many strict rules, what’s the fun of keeping fish??? Continue reading On-line Pet Peeves
While I’m laid-up on light-duty, I thought it might be a good time to make some changes to the website.
No more “Welcome” page. We have the Fish Room Journal right on the front page.
I may do away with my Danionins.com website, so the stock list is going to list all of the fish in my fish room. Clicking on the fish name will take you to a page with info about the fish and any sales info. It’s a “work-in-progress”, so it may take some time to complete.
I will most likely add an Articles page and move the articles from the Danionins site over here as well. I’ve got some articles on freshwater dwarf shrimp that used to be on the now defunct Arizona Inverts site. I might resurrect those here too.
